Most police recruitment is run by the states through their own boards — for example UPPRPB in Uttar Pradesh, CSBC in Bihar and ESB in Madhya Pradesh — for constable and sub-inspector posts. Constables for the central armed police forces (BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB) are recruited through SSC GD, and Delhi Police constables through SSC.

Selection usually has a written test followed by physical tests (running, height and chest), and the education and age rules differ from state to state. In state recruitment, reservation benefits are generally only for the state’s own domicile candidates.
